Marketing collateral, in marketing and sales, is the collection of media used to support the sales of a product or service. These sales aids are intended to make the sales effort easier and more effective.
Common examples include:
- Sales brochures and other printed product information including folders
- Posters and signs
- Visual aids used in sales presentations
- Web content
- Sales scripts
- Demonstration scripts
- Product data sheets
- Product white papers
Marketing and Sale Collateral differs from advertising in that it is used later in the sales cycle, usually when a prospective purchaser has been identified and sales staff are making contact with them. It usually follows some corporate identity pieces (e.g. business card, business stationery).
We have designed Dunkin Donuts point of sale pieces, Portland Pirate player cards, Portland SeaDogs Programs, billboards, pocket folders, L.L. Bean direct mail postcards and more brochures then we can count.
At Spire Express we have a long history of doing the graphic design of marketing and sales collateral, as well as printing and mailing it too! Perhaps it’s best to use an actual project as an example of the graphic design process for marketing and sales collateral. Spire Express conceptualized a sales magazine for New England’s largest truck dealer, McDevitt Trucks. This project helped them win the 2003 National Truck Dealer of the Year. It was the first magazine of it’s type and has since been replicated by Peterbilt and others. In any case, here is an example of the value proposition for a remake of the magazine (as I said, everything we do at Spire Express is gear toward ROI-return on investment, for our clients)
After you’ve read that you’ll understand why we are involved in so many magazine designs at Spire Express. The next stage is the conceptual layout of this New England marketing collateral piece, in this case a full magazine! This literally gets everybody on the same page and we can help confirm the clients advertising budget within the magazine. In some case are also involved in finding advertisers for clients’ sales collateral. We are a full-service marketing firm!
The last stage in marketing collateral graphic design is putting together the copy, the pictures and the layout graphics into the actual piece.
In some cases, Spire Express is also responsible for pre-press (proofing, file conversion etc.), printing, and mailing services for the marketing collateral.
